Susan’s Bio

Susan Rhodes works in acrylic and oil and is known for her street scenes that capture the quiet beauty of everyday life.  Susan has developed a distinctive style centered on the play of light and shadow.  She builds her compositions through numerous layers of transparent pigments the result being a luminous translucency that gives her final artwork depth and radiance.  Her goal is to transform familiar urban moments into artwork that captures the emotion or the feeling she had when first viewing an area.  Influenced by Impressionism and The Dutch Masters, her work is shaped by extensive travel throughout Europe where she studied the techniques and traditions of the masters.  She loves painting street scenes, marshes and water.

Originally from Boston and having lived in Charleston, Susan now resides in Ponte Vedra, FL and is excited to paint St. Augustine and the surrounding areas.  She studied at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), The Art Institute of Boston, The DeCordova Museum School in Lincoln, MA and has attended many plein air workshops across the country where she studied with several master painters.
